Officially known as the "American Power Boat Association Challenge Cup," it is the ultimate prize that every competitor strives to win at least once, for those who win the great race are forever known as Gold Cup champions. This year marks a historic milestone for the event for this will be the 100th running of the APBA Gold Cup, with the event to take place this July in Detroit. To help put this historic race into perspective and to help us understand what it means to hoist the Gold Cup trophy, we've assembled a panel of champions. On Friday, June 20th, the Museum will host a panel discussion featuring past Gold Cup winners Nate Brown, Chip Hanauer, George Henley, and Billy Schumacher talking about their experiences winning the world's greatest power boat race. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the panel discussion begins at 7:00 PM. Admission is free to Museum Members and is only $5.00 to all others.
Peace, Love
and Hydros - A Salute to 1968
Our Annual Gala Dinner & Auction is quickly approaching, and we need your help. It costs over $1,000 per day to keep the doors at Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum open. That's right, our annual budget is over $350,000 per year. Last year, over one third of our income came from the August Gala. It is an important event for the Museum. There are three ways that you can help make the Gala a success this year: Donate. If you own a business, donate goods or services from you business. If you have a favorite restaurant or hotel, ask them to donate a meal or a nights stay. If you have seasons tickets to a favorite team, donate tickets to a game. If you are a hydro collector donate a duplicate from your collection. Anything helps. And don't worry that your item is too small or wont be appreciated. We can take a couple of small items and put them together into an interesting package! Download a donation form (Adobe Acrobat Reader required). Attend. Bring some friends and have a great time. This years event is "Peace, Love, and Hydros - A Salute to 1968." Volunteer. If you have nothing to donate and can't afford tickets, come volunteer and help us put on the party! For more information on how you can help, contact the Museum office at (206) 764-9453. Hydroplane Racing in the Tri-Cities
David reports the new book focuses on the history of hydroplane racing in the Tri-Cities. It is 128 pages, and contains more than 215 photos from the likes of Bill Osborne, Chris Denslow and Steve Conner. It will sell for $19.95 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum. Here's a little bit about what's inside from the book's back cover: Pasco, Kennewick, and Richland sit along the banks of the Columbia River and form a large, vibrant community in Washington known as "the Tri-Cities." For over 40 years, tens of thousands of fans have come to the Columbia River to enjoy a day in the sun and watch the Columbia Cup Unlimited Hydroplane Race. Famous drivers like Bill Muncey, Dean Chenoweth, Chip Hanauer, and Dave Villwock have all come to Tri-Cities and battled deck-to-deck to win the Columbia Cup. The mission of the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Kent, Washington, is to honor, celebrate, and preserve the legacy of Unlimited Hydroplane Racing. The museum has generously offered its extensive collection of hydroplane photographs to Hydroplane Racing in the Tri-Cities. You can now pre-order David's latest book by calling the Museum office at (206) 764-9453. Also, David's recent books, "Hydroplane Racing in Seattle" and "Turbine Racing in Seattle" are also available through the Museum. HydroINSIDER Updates
